Rock and beach at Monterosso al Mare in the Cinque Terre
Local guide · Monterosso al Mare

Monterosso, your gateway to the Cinque Terre.

Monterosso has a real beach, a lived-in historic centre and convenient connections to the other villages. Al Carugio is a base for setting out on foot, by train or by sea.

The quick answer

Why start from Monterosso?

Because it combines the sea, a historic centre, a railway station and access to trails. It is a practical choice for mixing beach time, village visits and hiking without depending on a car.

More room for the sea

Monterosso is known for its beaches, allowing the sea to be a real part of your stay rather than a brief stop between trains.

The other villages are close

Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore are mainly reached by train and, seasonally and when conditions allow, by boat.

Explore the landscape on foot

Routes connect the historic centre with the trail network. Always check the official trail status before setting out.

Al Carugio is inside the village

Via Roma 100, at the beginning of the historic-centre ZTL: beaches, restaurants, services and the station are within walking distance.

08:00

Breakfast in the village

Start the day in one of the historic-centre cafés, with focaccia, coffee and the village slowly waking up.

10:00

Beach or trail

Spend the morning by the sea, or set out early on a route that is open and suitable for your experience.

16:00

Another village

The train makes it easy to visit one of the other Cinque Terre villages and return to Monterosso for dinner.

20:00

An evening in the historic centre

Restaurants, focaccia, Ligurian dishes and an after-dinner walk without getting back into a car.

Suggested itinerary

Three days to discover the Cinque Terre without chasing them.

A realistic plan that does not turn the journey into a collection of railway stations.

Day 1

Monterosso, slowly

Historic centre, the Church of San Giovanni Battista, the sea and a walk towards Fegina. The first day also helps you understand distances, the station and the village rhythm.

Day 2

Vernazza and Corniglia

Set out by train. Visit both villages and, only when a route is open and appropriate, walk a trail section in suitable footwear.

Day 3

Manarola and Riomaggiore

Spend the day in the eastern villages before returning to Monterosso. In season, consider a boat trip after checking services and sea conditions.

Before you travel

Small choices that improve the journey.

Suitable shoes, the right pace

Trails require suitable footwear, water and an honest assessment of difficulty. Conditions can change because of weather or maintenance.

Light luggage

Steps, climbs, trains and pedestrian streets are part of the experience. Compact luggage makes every transfer easier.

Book what really matters

During busy periods, organise accommodation, desired restaurants and specific activities in advance.

Leave room for the day

The landscape changes with the sea and weather. A flexible plan lets you choose each day between beaches, villages and walks.
